L'inspiration pour le personnage d'«American Psycho»? Tom Cruise

Dans un billet précédent, nous avions fait une analogie entre le personnage de David Bateman, l'homme d'affaire psychopathe du film American Psycho et le chef de de la secte de scientologie, David Miscavige.

À priori, il n'y a pas de lien entre Bateman et la scientologie... mais en est-on si certain?

Dans une entrevue avec le magazine BlackBook, la réalisatrice du film, Mary Harron, raconte comment Christian Bale et elle ont construit le personnage de Bateman:

How did you and Christian Bale develop his character in American Psycho?

It was definitely a process. We talked a lot, but he was in L.A. and I was in New York. We didn’t actually meet in person a lot, just talked on the phone. We talked about how Martian-like Patrick Bateman was, how he was looking at the world like somebody from another planet, watching what people did and trying to work out the right way to behave. And then one day he called me and he had been watching Tom Cruise on David Letterman, and he just had this very intense friendliness with nothing behind the eyes, and he was really taken with this energy.

Question: est-ce que Tom Cruise était déjà comme le décrit Harron avant de joindre la scientologie (ce qui veut dire que la scientologie est inefficace pour améliorer la personnalité), ou est-ce la scientologie qui a rendu Tom Cruise tel que le décrit Harron (ce qui veut dire que la scientologie rend passif-agressif)?
